Jason Reynolds is masterful in the way he can use such thin language in these gratis verse poems for such a powerful and emotional impact. I'm going to be talking well-nigh and sharing this volume for a very long fourth dimension.
Jason's skill at putting words together that take hold of your middle and caput, bringing yous into the lives of his characters, kids just trying their all-time to do what's correct and live the manner they've been taught, astounds me. Long Mode Down is no different. This book is going to take an affect. The type of impact that makes you question what you thought you knew and how life can be. This is a must-read and must-share in classrooms (7th & up), specially in those rooms where y'all have teens who are living Volition's life with the rules he's been taught to life past.
I tin't await to go my hands on a finished copy, to reread, sit with his words and turns of phrase, and observe the spots that bear repeating to kids in our classrooms. I tin can picture the faces in my head of the former students I wish were withal in my classroom then I could put this book right into their hands.

This book caters perfectly for younger readers. For readers who perhaps don't find reading that fascinating or find it difficult discover books that reflect their environment, considering there is so little of it.
Jason Reynolds writes a story that is gripping, easy to read and many young people, especially young black boys, can relate to. Those individuals who came from households and grew upward surrounded past gangs, gun violence and grief and who have all been painted with the aforementioned brush in the media.
Because the truth is, people are the mode they are for a reason. What is their background? What traumas take these individuals suffered from? Accept they been given the opportunity to deal with it in a healthy manner?
I loved the format this was told in. It'south written in verse, but tells a complete story of a immature male child who is out to seek revenge because his blood brother was killed.
He'southward xv, lost, confused and the only thing he knows is to follow the rules. The rules that accept been gear up by his family and community, because validation lies there and it's the only way a situation has e'er been handled.
So does he follow the rules or carve out his ain path?
The simplicity of it was cute. This is what boggles my heed slightly, I guess. That the writing was so simple, effortless, even so stunning and full of lessons. The mode worked incredibly well.
It's a book that educates. I loved it!

I feel equally if there's not much else to say virtually a book that took me an hour to read. Perhaps that's both the best and worst thing about this book. Although paced extremely well, it was such a quick read that I didn't have time to properly assimilate what I was reading.
"Another THING ABOUT THE RULESThey weren't meant to be broken.
They were meant for the cleavedto follow."
Simply let'due south be honest: this book is also a skilful read simply for being so necessary. The stories here need to be told. And they need to exist told to teens who might be going through things like this. The verse format is a great manner to spread messages that might not always become to sure teens. I'm distressing to go along mentioning this on reviews, simply: I am so proud of how far nosotros've gone.
The coolest matter about this book to me, and something I don't think I really noticed until I saw my favorite booktuber's review, is that this book doesn't try to exist nearly correct and wrong. It's not that simple, and Jason Reynolds knows that. I think this book has a lot of layers that don't come through at first, but that impale you lot more and more the deeper you look.

I've always loved stories written in verse, so when I heard about this own-vocalisation tale of the struggles that toxic masculinity and systemic racism place upon immature blackness men, I was immediately interested. I wanted to focus on supporting every bit many new-to-me black authors as possible in February, and Jason Reynolds was at the very top of my list. This man has a writing voice that absolutely needs to be heard.
"Just if the blood inside you is on the inside of someone else,
you never desire to run into it on the outside of them."
Will's words are so haunting and broken; he'due south lost his large brother, his hero, and now all he wants is to follow the rules – the rules that he'due south been taught his whole life. The rules that say the just fair response to the wrongful death of a loved one… is revenge. Will knows his mission is probably going to leave him in the aforementioned state as his brother, simply information technology'south all he's equipped to do. It'southward such a powerful metaphor for toxic masculinity and the means in which it prevents boys and men from knowing how to cope with trauma in meaningful, productive ways – not through their own faults, but because they're never been shown a amend manner.
"Just remember, when
you're walking in the nighttime,
make sure the nighttime
ain't walking into you."
My but complaint was that, while the events were hard to stomach, things moved and so quickly and with so footling development or preamble that, by the time I felt fastened to Will or his pain, I was turning the terminal few pages. I would've loved to accept seen this story fleshed out a bit more; nigh of the pages have only x-20 words printed on them, and I but retrieve that, had this been written like near verse novels, where there was a solid paragraph or two per folio, it would've carried the impact beyond so much better and would take meant that much more. That said, I even so admittedly loved this volume and cannot wait to run into what Jason Reynolds releases side by side.

This book follows fifteen year old William, a boy who'due south only witnessed his older brother'due south murder. The tragic issue has left him hurt and confused, with the addition of a broken female parent to business relationship for.
All his life, William has been taught the 'rules' for situations like these:
i. No crying
2. No snitching
iii. Revenge
These rules are why William finds himself on an elevator with a gun tucked into his pocket, descending downward to the level of his brother'south killer. Down to the human he intends to kill for the innocent life he'south taken.
Things take a strange plough when on each flooring, a murdered soul from Volition'due south by life enters the lift, each sharing the story of their death. Within the few minutes it takes the elevator to descend, William will take to determine whether he intends to comport out the revenge he originally sought out for.
Having read one of Jason Reynolds previous works on police brutality, (All American Boys) I was expecting another corking novel detailing the personal effects that come with losing someone to some other'due south violence. While the prose of these two books are certainly different, I found Long Mode Downwards slightly superior because of the narrative in poesy. The punch seems to land harder whenever I read a story told in poems.
Reynolds also does a fantastic chore giving the reader a sense of William's confusion and fearfulness. It is a constant reminder that the protagonist is only fifteen, being put into a situation many could never imagine. It was and so easy to wing through the pages with such a powerful voice to follow.
The way things wrapped upwardly was so, so incredible. It gave readers plenty of room to think and reflect on the novel every bit a whole, while however managing to remain a satisfying decision. This was an accented wonder to read, I'd recommend it to anyone willing to requite information technology a go.

I was able to finish this in about an hour. Information technology is written in verse. My interpretation of this book is that it is a message about the bicycle of violence. And I did very much similar the delivery. Our principal character believes that he must uphold justice for his brothers decease, past killing his killer. Only on his way downwards in the lift, he encounters the spirits of the people in his life who have passed away.
In that location are a lot of valuable lessons and I practice believe that this is an important book.
I think the reason I didn't completely love this has a lot to do with the fact that it was written in verse. I've never been a poetry person. I don't really mesh well with it. I'm not certain if it's due to the style I was taught it or if it's simply a personal preference. Not saying that I don't appreciate information technology, I certainly do, but personally, I'm not able to savor it to the full extent I should. To my mess of a brain, if poesy doesn't rhyme or have a prominent rhythm or blueprint, it only seems that the enter fundamental was pressed in random places. That in that location is just a agglomeration of stop points between words that I cease to empathise. And while reading the book, sometimes I didn't comprehend why it chose to have line breaks in certain places and not others. I wasn't able to menstruation with the words. Then honestly, this is a more "it'due south me not you" type situation.
But overall, this is however an amazing book that I recommend entirely. Especially if unlike me, you are a person who actually likes books written in verse.
